Fireworks.

Almost every night, in any part of town, you can hear the sweet lullaby of fireworks as you doze off. Last night, however, we had the privilege of experiencing them. As Jon, Char, and Seth and I made our way home after dinner at Vista Hermosa, we saw in the distance, bright, colorful fires lighting up the sky. Obviously, they drew us in. We made our way up the block to see what the commotion was.

The celebration of la Virgin de Merced a la Iglesia de la Virgin de Merced.

Obviously.

Who wouldn't want to celebrate the 'birthday' of their church with fireworks?

I only wish we had our camera. My descriptions will do it no justice. But imagine...2 bamboo structures, 40 feet high. Fireworks spinning from the sides, the tops, the insides and spontaneously shooting out the top. At times, an exploding spinning ring would shoot into the sky, only to fall back into the crowd below... cinders and all.

To top it all off...there was a marching band.

Just thought I'd share a piece of our nightly entertainment with you.

...and to think - free admission!

I love Quito.
